An Integrated Automatic Writing Evaluation and SVVR Approach to Improve Students’ EFL Writing Performance

Writing is a challenging task for English Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. Based on artificial intelligence technology, Automatic Evaluation (AWE) has received considerable attention from the EFL research community in recent years, since it can provide timely and personalized feedback to writing learners. However, researchers have pointed out that while AWE satisfactory vocabulary use grammar, relatively inadequate at providing efficient organization, coherence, content. Spherical Video-based Virtual Reality (SVVR) highly immersive in-depth interaction learning environment makes up this shortcoming. Authentic experiences help enhance learners’ perceptions understanding of context, assist students creating constructive internal connections between their personal topic writing, thus improving quality. Therefore, current study proposed an approach which integrated SVVR investigate its effects writing. To effectiveness approach, quasi-experiment was carried university’s course. The experimental group (37 students) used SVVR–AWE control (39 conventional with AWE. results showed method not only considerably enhanced students’ performance, but also raised motivation, self-efficacy, sense presence, as well reduced anxiety. Furthermore, interviews were performed thematic inductive qualitative analysis interview data conducted impact behaviors perceptions.
